Great Britain (Big Cities)
London is the capital of the United Kingdom. The Romans built it and called it Londinium at the beginning of the first millennium. They settled there because the river was vital to trade and travel. The River Thames flows from west to east and divides the capital into the two parts known as the north bank and the south bank. There are some landmarks in London which help tourists recognise the city. The most famous are St. Paul's Cathedral, the Palace of Westminster and Westminster Abbey.
The first Norman King, William the Conqueror, was crowned in 1067 in Westminster Abbey. William built the Tower, still one of the most famous sights of London.
During the Middle Ages, London increased in size and wealth, the old City and the area around the Royal Palace at Westminster became the main centres. Tudor monarchs lived in Whitehall, and because Henry VIII was fond of hunting, there are three parks in London: St. James's Park, the Green Park, and the Hyde Park. The Court moved to Buckingham Palace in the 19th century. Here and in the west are the best theatres, cinemas, concert halls, museums, shops and hotels. The name "West End" means wealth, luxury and goods of high quality.
Tourists with plenty of money spend their time in the West End.
The Port of London is to the east of the City. Here we can find miles of docks and great industrial areas.
At present the population of London is about 9 million people, and a lot of tourists visit this wonderful place every year. One of the newest attractions is the London Eye. It took seven years to complete it. It was built to celebrate the new millennium. There is an amazing fact about this construction. It was constructed piece by piece throughout Europe. As it was the biggest observatory wheel ever designed, its pieces were built in different countries - the main structure was created in Holland, the central park was built in Czech Republic, the cables were made in Italy and the capsules in France. So it is a really European project!
