Natural Sciences as a Self-Consistent System(?)

  • Andrij Rovenchak,

  • Department for Theoretical Physics, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv

Natural Sciences as a Self-Consistent System

Self-Consistency

  • is understood in the sense whether the methods and techniques of a certain science are sufficient to obtain the true knowledge about its subject.

Simplified Model:

  • Biology

A bit modified one:

  • Biology

The change of scientific paradigm similar to that of the beginning of 20th century will never occur again in the future, every new theory of the future will not become as revolutionary as those that have appeared by now.

The problem of new subjectivization of the reality and removal of the absolute from the science caused, in particular, by relativistic and quantum theories.

In modern — the post-classical rationalism period — extra-scientific elements are involved, like humanism and ethics. Their role, however, have not been determinative.

  • Cf. problems of human clone, mass destruction weapons (biological, chemical, nuclear).

Several Principles:

  • Anthropic Principle

Anthropic Principle

  • Weak Anthropic Principle: The observed values of all physical and cosmological quantities are not equally probable but they take on values restricted by the requirement that there exist sites where carbon-based life can evolve and by the requirements that the Universe be old enough for it to have already done so.

Causality Principle

  • For any given physical system the action on any part or point at a certain (local) time can only depend on physical systems and points in the past.

Correspondence Principle

  • Every new theory should reduce to previously existing ones in the way that a limiting transition by some parameters, in particular, newly introduced (usually, they are fundamental constants) leads to the previously known results

The abovementioned principles refer to common sense belonging already to meta-science.

Conclusion

  • Natural sciences can evolve into a self-consistent system only in the “asymptotic” sense.
